SEGA finally announces 'NiGHTS' sequel for Wii

After weeks of speculation, Sega of America and Sega of Europe have finally announced the long awaited next installment in the NiGHTS franchise, called “NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams,” for Nintendo’s Wii gaming console.

The sequel to the mid-90s Saturn hit NiGHTS, which is being developed exclusively for the Wii game console, is expected to be released in fall 2007.

“We plan to deliver a gameplay experience never before seen on the Wii with NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams. The game takes full advantage of the unique Wii Remote controller enabling gamers to guide NiGHTS through spectacularly designed dream worlds intertwined with a story about home and courage,” said Scott A. Steinberg, Vice President of Marketing, Sega of America.

Produced by Sonic Team under the watchful eyes of Takashi Izuka, who worked on the original SEGA Saturn title, the sequel is set to launch the character onto Wii with a full range of Wii-remote gestures, as gamers battle against a nightmarish demon.

In this game, players will once again take on the role of ethereal jester NiGHTS and fly through Nightopia, a rich and vibrant world where dreams come to life. Gamers will have to find inventive ways to confront the “Nightmarens”, a race of do-badders from the adjacent Nightmare world, by using their acrobatic skills, freedom of flight and other special abilities to protect Nightropia.

They will use the innovative Wii remote to experience a heightened sense of gliding, spiraling, and looping through seven mystical dream worlds packed with high-flying adventure.

"NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams takes full advantage of the innovative Wii Remote by letting gamers fly through breathtaking dream worlds," said Gary Knight, European Marketing Director, SEGA Europe. "NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams brings an exciting and unique gameplay experience to one of SEGA's most cherished franchises and is sure to attract a new generation of fans."

The first NiGHTS game was released for the Sega Saturn, a 32-bit video game console, way back in 1996. It had become a huge hit, as it became the top-selling game for the Saturn.
