The Dirty Picture: Review

As promised in promotional trailers, Milan Luthria’s ‘The Dirty Picture’ offers ample entertainment and enough dirtiness in Vidya's brave and bold portrayal of the life of an '80s dancing star.

The Dirty Picture

Director: Milan Luthria

Cast: Vidya Balan, Nasseruddin Shah, Tusshar Kapoor, Emraan Hashmi, Anju Mahendroo

Loosely inspired from the real life story of Southern siren Silk Smitha, ‘The Dirty Picture' is so hot, you'll need to take a cold shower after watching it.

Story-line
‘The Dirty Picture’ tells the story of a village girl Reshma (Vidya Balan), who runs away from her husband’s house and goes to Kollywood (Tamil Cinema) hoping to become a star. She tries to get a role in movies, but is insulted by a director for being unattractive and useless.

After a lot of struggle, she gets a chance to fill in for a female dancer where she wears a revealing outfit and dances with whips. Her bold dancing steps and seductive looks bring in a lot of male audience to theatres and Reshma becomes an overnight sensation.

After that there’s no looking back. The small-town, starry-eyed girl is transformed into Silk Smitha -- a sex symbol, an item girl who is now ready to take the film industry by storm.

Silk meets her idol Suryakanth (Nasseruddin Shah) who ignores her at first but then falls for her and gives her the much-desired break in film industry. Within no time Silk's fame and stardom outshines Suryakanth's.

Envious of her success, Suryakanth starts insulting her at public places and leaves her heartbroken one night saying she is a dirty secret that no one wants to talk about in broad daylight.

Thereafter, Suryakanth’s younger brother, writer Ramukant (Tusshar Kapoor), falls in love with Silk and plans to marry her. Even Silk agrees for the proposal thinking there’s someone who loves her and not her body. But due to her over-abusive nature, Ramu also ditches her.

Despite all the fame and adulation, Silk is torn between love and betrayal and ends up becoming an alcoholic and a chain-smoker.

She decides to produce her own film, but loses all her money in the venture. With no offers left and her position replaced by other item girls, Silk’s career takes a backseat when Abraham (Emraan Hashmi), a director who hates her to the core, starts liking her and tries to get things in place for Silk. But it’s too late!

Performance-wise
‘The Dirty Picture' is entirely a Vidya Balan film who gets down and dirty to deliver a power-packed performance once again after ‘No One Killed Jessica’.

Vidya has pulled off a difficult role with perfection in a way that could have otherwise given her a cheap image forever.

There are many moments in the film where Vidya’s sheer display of audacity -- both verbal and non-verbal -- will leave you choked and gasping for breath.

Naseeruddin Shah is perfect in his character, Emraan’s screen presence is effective, but Tusshar is a letdown. Milan Luthria's direction is brilliant.

Watch the film; ‘The Dirty Picture’ is much better than the usual dirt.
