Rockstar: The Review

Imtiaz Ali's 'Rockstar' is a contemporary film that’s a mélange of love, humor, music, drama, and heartbreak. However, the film leaves a lot to be desired, as it loses focus and wanders from topic to topic in an incoherent story.

Director: Imtiaz Ali

Cast: Ranbir Kapoor, Nargis Fakhri, Shammi Kapoor, Piyush Mishra, Shernaz Patel, Aditi Rao Hydari

The film tries to make a disjointed transition between the life of a 'Rockstar' and his love story, but writer-director Imtiaz fails to strike a balance.

Though the movie-makers attempted to create an altogether different sort of film, 'Rockstar' combination of love and pain reminds one of 'Devdas'.

Performance
One of the biggest stumbling blocks in 'Rockstar' is Ranbir-Nargis’s over-hyped onscreen chemistry that fails to impress.

Where Ranbir Kapoor is able to do justice to his role of a 'Rockstar', Nargis fails to impress.

However, A.R. Rahman’s music comes to the film’s rescue, endowing it with a Sufi soul.

Cinematographer Anil Mehta offers us a visually brilliant treat as he captures the scenic beauty of Kashmir.

Storyline
Janardhan Jakhar (Ranbir Kapoor), a middle-class Pitampura guy in Delhi, idolizes rockstar Jim Morrison and wants to become a true-blue artist like him.

His friend Khatana (Kumud Mishra) tells him that to become a great artist one has to face at least one heartbreak, as many successful artists have done in their lives.

While struggling to become a rockstar, Janardhan comes across rich and arrogant Heer Kaul (Nargis Fakhri). Initially she hates Janardhan, but later befriends him.

Heer invites him for a wedding in Kashmir where she realizes that she has fallen in love with Janardhan. She never confesses, gets married and leaves for Prague.

Meanwhile, due to some misunderstanding, Janardhan is kicked out of the house after his brother thinks he committed a robbery.

Janardhan finds comfort by staying in Nizamuddin Dargah and later meets Ustad Jameel Khan (Shammi Kapoor), a musician, who gives him an opportunity to fulfill his dreams.

This takes him to Prague where he once again meets Heer.

Passionate encounters between Janardhan and Heer follow, and soon her husband comes to know about their affair.

Bottom-line
Though the film's story-line fails, 'Rockstar' isn’t a cinematic mess. Girls can watch it for Ranbir!
