There is a wizard of sophistication and tear jerking comedy drama in Karan’s ‘We Are Family’. The story of the film says nothing new, but the way the director, Siddharth Malhotra has treated the script makes all the difference.

Filmmaker Karan Johar seems to have the trademarked the skill needed to churn out a remake. ‘We Are Family’, the remake of the 1998 Hollywood film ‘Stepmom’, has been remade for Indian audiences, with all the ingredients needed in a Hindi film.

This run of the mill drama is about two women, Maya and Shreya sharing one family.

‘We Are Family’ does have emotional strings, it does make you laugh, cry, sympathize and also dislike.

There is also a dropping of originality in the characters when you compare them with the original Hollywood movie ‘Stepmom’ characters.

This grossly sentimental drama centers on the relationship between a divorced mother Maya and the new woman in her ex-husband’s life.

However, the only thing that can be labeled good in ‘We Are Family’, is the effort put in by the lead actors Kajol, Kareena and Arjun Rampal, who have etched their roles with care.

Story-Line
Set in Australia, the film begins with Shreya (played Kareena) being in love with Aman (Arjun Rampal). There is an interesting twist about Aman. He is divorced and his kids live with his ex-wife Maya (played by Kajol).

Shreya has been in a relationship with Aman for nearly three years and wants to make it permanent. The film is at its best when Aman chooses to introduce his soon-to-be-wife Shreya to his family.

After this breezy scene, there comes the unexplored territory of mothering for Shreya, when Maya comes to know about her terminal illness. After diagnosing that, she convinces Aman’s wife-to-be to take care of the kids as her replacement.

Initially, the kids hate her and also fire cheap insults at every opportunity. But eventually, they fall in love with their stepmom.

Bottom-line
If you have a yen for watching some emotional drama, then freak out on this film. A good watch for the whole family.
