The veteran actor was in London for a medical check up, as he was not keeping well for the last few days.
Anand's manager Mohan Churiwala, informed, “His son Sunil came out of the bathroom and saw that Dev saab was not responding. He called the doctor, who said that he had a heart attack.”
The actor's body will be flown down to Mumbai for cremation.
He is survived by his wife Kalpana Karthik, son Sunil, and daughter Devina.
The evergreen superstar
Anand, who began his career in the military censor office at Churchgate, Bombay, for a salary of Rs 165 in the early 40s, debuted as an actor in film 'Hum Ek Hain' in 1946.
But his first big break came when we was cast for movie 'Ziddi', which released in 1947. Instantly, Anand became a superstar. Since then, he never looked back.
In his 65-year career, Anand acted in dozens of films, and gave several superhits such as 'Ziddi', 'Aandhiyan', 'House No. 44', 'Nau Do Gyarah', 'Taxi Driver', 'C.I.D.', 'Paying Guest', 'Kala Pani', 'Guide', and 'Johny Mera Naam'.
The actor won two Filmfare Awards, one for film 'Kala Paani' in 1958, and other for 'Guide' in 1966.
Anand also received Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 1993 and Screen Videocon Lifetime Achievement Award in 1996.
He was even honored with Padma Bhushan in 2001 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2002 for his outstanding contribution towards Indian cinema.
Lately, Anand was working on an American film project 'Song Of Life'. The actor was to play the main character in the film, which was to be shot in United States.
Bollywood mourns Anand's death
The demise of the legendary actor has left the film fraternity tear-eyed. Various Bollywood stars took to Twitter to offer their condolences.
