Tiger Pataudi passes away


Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi, the youngest captain of the Indian cricket team, and one of its most charismatic players, died at the age of 70. Pataudi was suffering from a lung infection, in which the passage of the oxygen to the lungs is less than normal. He lost his battle against this severe infection, which had plagued him since August, at a Delhi hospital, on Thursday at 5.55 pm.


Tiger Pataudi, as he was fondly called, played 46 tests between 1961 and 1975. He scored 2,793 runs at an average of 34.91. Captain at the raw age of 21, this adventurous batsman played most of his career with one eye, after losing his right eye in an accident.

A dashing batsman, who was unafraid to hit even the fastest bowlers, Pataudi was also an excellent fielder. Under his captaincy, the Indian spin bowling got the prominence it deserved.

Pataudi’s association with the game continued well past his retirement from international cricket. He was the Indian team’s manager from 1974-75, and also acted as an ICC match refree.He was an advisor to the BCI, and was also on the general council of the IPL. Not one to mince words, he was known to speak his mind when it came to the welfare of Indian cricket.

He was the 9th and the last Nawab of Pataudi, till 1971, when the 26th Amendment to the Constitution abolished royal entitlements. But you could not get the ‘Nawab’ out of Pataudi, whose demeanour, whose attitude,whose charisma made him stand apart.

Pataudi is related to the film industry in more than one way. He was married to the well-known actress, Sharmila Tagore. His son Saif Ali Khan Pataudi, is one of the ruling Khans in Bollywood today. Soha Ali Khan Pataudi, his daughter, has also made a mark in the film industry.

The death of this ‘Tiger’ will be mourned not just by family,friends, and the cricketing world, but also by millions of cricket lovers around the globe.
