ZNMD hits troubled waters for ridiculing Doordarshan tune

It seems like Zoya Akhtar’s latest venture ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’ has hit troubled waters by ridiculing the signature tune of Doordarshan.

Buzz has it that after watching Hrithik’s scoffing parody of the Doordarshan tune in the film, several filmmakers have expressed their annoyance over it.

In one of the scenes in the film, three friends factually muse over the tune and this has not gone down well with certain filmmakers, who believe that the tune is sacred and ridiculing it shows insensitivity.

Speaking about Hrithik’s take-off on the tune, a prominent filmmaker said, “We grew up watching Doordarshan. That tune is sacred. To ridicule it shows a lack of sensitivity.”

Farhan defends against the criticism
Some from the industry also voiced their opinion against the makers of ZNMD for choosing to mock a prized institution.

Defending against the criticism about the mockery of the tune, Farhan Akhtar, co- producer and one of the actors in ZNMD, said that they didn’t mean to mock the tune and asked everyone to look beyond Hrithik’s humming to understand the situation of the scene.

“That scene was not an after-thought, it was part of the script. We grew up at a time when that tune was integral to our lives. When we'd be out playing cricket, we could hear the Doordarshan tune from our windows and it signalled the end of our game.

In the same way, it signals the end of the holidays for the three characters in ZNMD. I wish people would look beyond Hrithik's humming and understand why it was done,” said Akhtar.

Friendship is a beautiful relationship, says Farhan
The Akhtars seem to be focusing on friendship as a theme in most of their films as was seen in ‘Dil Chahta Hai’ and now in their latest film ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’.

When the filmmaker was asked about it he stated that friends had remained a pillar of strength when their parents Javed Akhtar and Honey Irani got divorced two decades ago.

Talking about friendship, Farhan said, “Friendship is a beautiful relationship. My friends played a very important part during our (he and his sister, Zoya) growing up period.”

The filmmaker, who is content that his last week’s release ZNMD has been receiving rave reviews across the country, stated that people have loved the film.

“People haven’t been calling me directly in bulk, but I have been hearing a lot of praise through my mom, my dad and Shabana (Azmi). People across ages have watched the film and loved it. I guess, whether you are 19 or 90, friends and friendship is something you would always identify with," said Farhan.
