Aamir apologises to Dhobi community; settles title row

When few days ago Dhobi Mahasangh had objected the title of actor Aamir Khan’s upcoming film ‘Dhobi Ghat’, written and directed by his wife Kiran Rao, no one had imagined that the matter will be resolved so quickly and amicably.

Interestingly, after finding out Dhobi Mahasangh’s objection, the husband-wife immediately arranged a meeting with the community leaders and conveyed their apologies, if they have hurt their feelings.

Aamir told the community leaders that they were not aiming to offend or create controversy with the film’s title. And if they knew that they will be offending people, then they would have simply chosen some other title.

"When I met (Amit) Khatriji, Kanoji and Dr Satishji (of the community's associations), I realized that unknowingly we might have hurt someone.

“I have full love and respect for them and I deeply apologies if I have hurt you," said the actor, when questioned at the film’s promotional event.

‘Dhobi Ghat’ controversy
The whole controversy erupted three days ago when Akhil Bharathiya Dhobi Mahasanga and Akhil Bhartiya Dhobi Samaj objected the film’s title.

Community leaders feared that their caste might have been portrayed in a demeaning way, hence, they wanted Aamir to change the title.

Aamir and Kiran immediately met the community leaders and listened to their concern. They even showed the film to the community leaders and explained that the film has been named after a place in Mumbai, ‘Dhobi Ghat'.

Though the leaders understood Aamir’s point, still they wanted him to change the title. Hence, Aamir agreed to do so just three days before the film’s nationwide release.

But when the Dhobi Mahasangh found out about the huge losses Aamir will have to bear due to this last minute change, they decided to let go of their objection as the film’s story is not really about dhobis.

Dhobi community leaders all praises for film
Surprisingly, the dhobi community leaders not just let go of their objections, but also liked the film a lot.

They had nothing, but praises for the actor Prateik Babbar, who’s playing a dhobi in the film.

Besides Prateik, the film also features Aamir Khan, Kriti Malhotra and Monica Dogra in main lead.
