Big B managed to garner a whooping amount of 4.86 crore, for the campaign, through NDTV’s 12-hour telethon.
During the telethon, Bachchan, the campaign ambassador, along with NDTV's Prannoy Roy and Vikram Chandra highlighted the key issues of tiger conservation.
Apart from auctioning his watch and two sun glasses, which fetched him Rs. 845,000, the megastar donated Rs. 28 lakh. Investment banker Hemendra Kothari donated Rs. 2.43 crore and Hyderabad-based Chirec School raised Rs. 220, 000, for the cause.
While addressing the press, Bachchan said, "A year back when this campaign started, I felt honored to be a part of it; and today I can see the efforts over the year bear fruit. The donations from this 12-hour telethon would be of immense help in providing the infrastructure required for consistent operations and activities in tiger conservation.”
Bhaichung Bhutia, Abhishek Bachchan, Nitin Gadkari, Dia Mirza, Manish Malhotra, Soli Sorabjee, Priya Dutt were among the other’s who supported the cause.
Industry chamber Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), and corporate such as Westside also lent a helping hand.
About the campaign
Already we have lost many species of animals in the last century. Our national animal is also in danger of extinction now .In the year 1937, India had about 7000 tigers and now, we have only 1411 tigers (estimated) left.
‘Save Our Tiger’ media campaign is an initiative of telecommunication giant Aircel in partnership with WWF-India.
Since its launch, it has managed to get remarkable support from the common man and helped increase awareness about the need to save the tigers.
The campaign has interestingly involved some of the India's well-known celebrities including sports persons.
