Phas Gaye Re Obama: An interesting concept

'Phas Gaye Re Obama' (PGRO) is a small budget comedy, which deals with the repercussions of recession on different class of society across the globe.

PGRO features Neha Dhupia, Rajat Kapoor, Manurishi, Amol Gupte and Sanjay Mishra. Written and directed by Subhash Kapoor and produced by Ashok Pandey under the banner of Revel Films, PGRO seems to be very interesting on paper. Now, how it turns out on-screen is still to be known.

Synopsis
'Phas Gaye Re Obama' is a comedy set against the backdrop of global recession that originated in USA. The film traces the journey of Om Shashtri (Rajat Kapoor), an American citizen of Indian origin, who loses all his wealth overnight to the global recession and has been asked to vacate his home by the bank unless he pays up $100,000 (mortgaged amount) within 30 days.

Seeing no other option, Om comes to India to sell a small piece of an ancestral property. But within days of landing in India, he is kidnapped by a “recession-hit” underworld gang, who thinks that he is still a millionaire.

What happens to Om? Is he able to save his home? How did the poor gangster cope with their poor catch and what do small town Indian gangsters have to say to President Obama, largely forms the rest of the story.

The film showcases how global recession/ meltdown impacted lives of America based businessmen to underworld dons in the dusty plains of small town India.

Director’s cut
Elaborating about the film’s background during the special screening of the film, director Subhash Kapoor said, “People see the global recession as a phenomena triggering unemployment and fall in market income. But it had a deep impact on everyone and we have taken an initiative to portray this anxiety in a humorous way."

The director also claimed that the Dec. 3 release is the first film to be made on the economic crisis effect on the crime world. This film has been made on a budget of Rs 3 crore.

"It occurred to me that the late recession which became a global phenomenon must have had an impact on the underworld activities as well. Then we hit upon the idea to make a film on this serious subject matter in a rib-tickling manner," he added.

Interestingly, the director is quite confident about the success of the film, and said, "Film industry over the months has witnessed a spate of box office success of films made on an economical budget which proves that if a film has a great storyline with excellent execution then it is destined to receive a thumbs up from the audience. This is our inspiration.”

Box-office prediction
Considering the interesting story, the film should recover its cost (which is only 3 crores), especially through theatrical business (even if it does not do well).

Earning through satellite rights, home video and music rights might also garner profit.
