It was on the Independence Day, Aug. 15, 1975 when Sippy's third film opened to lukewarm response, but soon word spread about the movie and it became the history.
According to viewers, 'Sholay' is the only film in the industry which is appreciated for many reasons and all the characters are highly praised, especially, the audience love the character named 'Gabbar Singh' and imitate him in daily conversation by ignoring his mean streak.
Famous star-cast
The movie casts Dharmendra and dream girl Hema Malini, who were one of the leading pairs of the 70s.
Sanjeev Kumar, who enacted the role of 'Thakur', was a versatile actor of that era.
Along with these famous personalities, Amitabh Bachchan portrayed the role of 'Jay'. This actor had earlier proved himself by his performance in 'Anand' and 'Zanjeer'. Besides, Jaya Bhaduri was also an established actress.
Above all, Amjad Khan enacted as 'Gabbar Singh', who appeared as the ferocious dacoit in the film.
Dialogues made the movie a big hit
Dialogues like ‘Hum angrezon ke zamaane ke jailor hain' by Asrani, ‘Kitne aadmi the?' by Amjad, 'Sardar, maine aapka namak khaya hai' by Viju Khote, and 'Basanti inn kutto ke saamne mat nachna' by Dharmendra are still fresh in the minds of the audience.
One of Sholay's most memorable characters was a dacoit named Samba, played by Mac Mohan passed away earlier this year. His dialogue, 'poore pachaas hazaar' has been used innumerable times in satires and spoofs.
