After celluloid, ‘3 idiots’ set to conquer television


The television rights for the biggest money spinner of Bollywood, ’3 idiots’, have been bought by Multi Screen Media, which runs the two channels Sony Entertainment and MAX.


Multi Screen Media won the bidding battle against Color and have bought the exclusive Satellite TV telecast rights of ‘3 idiots’, for five years.

Directed by Raj Kumar Hirani, ‘3 idiots’ stars Amir Khan, R Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, Kareena Kapoor, and Boman Irani. Upon release, the film broke all existing opening box office records in India and worldwide.

Sony pockets the 3 idiots deal
Sony and Colors were locked in a bidding battle for the film. But somehow Multi Screen Media managed to beat the Colors bid and buy the rights for five years.

The deal has been closed at an exorbitant price. The price for the film that is being whispered in trade circles is in excess of Rs 200 million.

However, MAX EVP & business head Sneha Rajani refused to comment on the price. She said, “We believe in bringing only the biggest and the best of entertainment to our viewers. With the acquisition of ‘3 Idiots’, the network today boasts of an enviable bank of blockbuster film titles."

The deal has been licensed through Eros International, which had acquired ‘3 Idiots’ and other films as part of an overall deal with Vidhu Vinod Chopra.

The ‘3 idiots’ legacy
‘3 Idiots’ was released in over 2000 screens including 366 screens abroad. It was the highest-grossing film in its opening weekend in India and has the highest opening day collections for a Hindi film ever.

It set a box office record for the Indian film industry, grossing over $100 million worldwide.

Producer of ‘3 idiots’, Vidhu Vinod Chopra adds, “3 Idiots’ is very close to my heart and has been the biggest success of the Hindi film industry.”

Much pleased with the deal with Sony, he adds “Most of my movies are with Sony since many years and presents their films in their unique, inimitable style.”
