Lyricist Javed Akhtar meets ACP after death threats

Bollywood’s renowned scriptwriter and lyricist Javed Akhtar on Saturday met with the Additional Commissioner of Police (APC) (West Mumbai) Amitabh Gupta in relation to the death threats he’s receiving of late via e-mails.

Apparently, Akhtar became the target of radial Muslims because he spoke out against the fatwa that bans Muslim women from working in offices.

“It’s not new or unusual for me to receive such threats, but this time it was in detail and sounded sinister,” said Akhtar in a statement released after his meeting with ACP Gupta.

He revealed that police has offered him protection after he showed them the emails that warned him to get ready to face consequences for his comments if he did not apologize.

“I spoke to the police last night, today I came and showed them the email,” said Akhtar.

Reportedly, one e-mail received by Akhtar reads, “Your countdown has begun.”

Javed surprised at the reaction his words provoked
Javed revealed that so far he has received different sorts of reactions from people. He said some people have appreciated that he took a stand against such an evil.

But he’s surprised that his words have invoked such strong reaction from some people that they think threatening him is the best course of action.

"I got different kinds of responses. While on one hand people had reservations about my stance, on the other I was applauded for my comments. You can voice your opinion but can't threaten anyone," said Akhtar.

Police investigating the matter
ACP Gupta confirmed that Akhtar has registered a formal complaint and they will decide the best course of action only after investigating the matter thoroughly.

Currently, they are in process of examining all the e-mails Akhtar has provided them with.

“We will investigate further and then decide on the course of action. The mails have come from several email IDs,” said ACP Gupta in a statement given to the media.

He added that they have also asked for help from the Cyber Cell to locate the origins and senders of the emails.
