Vidhu Vinod Chopra serves copyright violation notice to “The 4the Idiot” maker

The critically acclaimed filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra, who gave the biggest hit of 2009 “3 Idiots,” on Sunday had a legal notice served to the makers of the animation film ‘The 4th Idiot’ for copyright violation.

The producer and the director of the animated film, Biswaroop Roy Chowdhury, has been asked to refrain from advertising/promoting his movie by using ‘3 Idiots’ name/story.

Reportedly, Vidhu is so furious with Chowdhury for making a replica of his movie ‘3 Idiots’ that he has even slapped a copyright violation case against him.

The notice sent out to the makers of the animated film ‘The 4th Idiot’ claims that the filmmakers “have used the name of our movie, its story (including scenario, screenplay, dialogues, etc) characters for publicizing and promoting the film”.

Chowdhury denies accusations
Chowdhury, who’s a Guinness record holder for the sharpest memory and power, in a statement denied all the charges leveled against him by Chopra.

"I do not find anything in my film that would even remotely violate Vidhu Vinod Chopra's copyright to his film,” said Chowdhury.

"My objective is to tell young children that they must let the mind guide them. This is where I differ from Chopra, whose film seeks to profess dominance of the heart over mind," he further added.

Vidhu contemplating launching a film archive division
Chopra is planning to launch a division completely devoted to classic films in the form of detailed books for the benefit of cine lovers and students.

As per a source familiar with the matter, “The endeavour of this division is to catalogue the minutest details of a script. The book will include the screenplay, deleted scenes, character sketches, reworked scenes, casting process and everything that went into making the particular film.”

The first few books that will hit the store shelves will be Chopra’s films such as Munnabhai series, 3 Idiots and will be followed by old classics like Mother India, Pyaas and Kagaz Ke Phool.

When Vidhu was asked about the rumors, he confirmed by saying, “Yes, I wish to catalogue screenplays of classics.”
