The committee looks into proposed amendments to Copyright laws.
Aamir hurt by criticism
On Tuesday, Aamir wrote to Human Resources Development Minister, Kapil Sibal stating, “It seems to me that there is an attempt by certain people to attack me in public by printing lies about me, thereby turning the attention away from a genuine debate about copyright issues.”
Accordingly, in a recent meeting between producers and writers over the issue of royalties, Aamir seemed to cut to the quick by taking all the credit of success from the writers, conveying that popularity of the songs depends on the actor, the way and style it’s picturised and not on the lyricist's attempt.
His heated continuation of the debate, made a peeved Javed Akhtar hit back stating that the song "Papa kehte hain" became a hit in spite of the fact that Aamir was not a star at that time.
Aamir who became edgy after such assertions also wrote in the letter to Sibal saying, “I am grateful to you for inviting me to be part of a committee to discuss the various issues regarding amendments to the Copyright Act. However in light of these public attacks on me, I don't think I am comfortable to be part of this committee.”
Aamir not galvanized by monetary achievements
The actor added, “I take great pride in my honesty and integrity, and attach an enormous amount of value to my sense of justice and fair play. Monetary achievements have never excited me. If they had, I would have acted in many more than one film a year, thereby being financially much richer than I currently am.”
Even though his last film broke all colossal box-office records, he clearly informed that he is not obsessed with his monetary achievements and is never uncertain to do challenging work.
He clearly wrote, “Had I been driven by monetary achievements I would not have produced films that challenge the mainstream and break new ground, films like 'Lagaan', 'Taare Zameen Par' and 'Peepli Live', that most producers would hesitate to produce.”
Aamir respects his audiences’ admiration
The irate actor also wrote that he strongly believes what he earned is the love and respect of his colleagues and the audience.
He also proudly mentioned that he’d achieved everything only through his work and through the manner in which he works and that “these public attacks are most damaging to me emotionally and leave me crippled.”
Being in the industry for quite a long period of time, Aamir feels that he has lots to contribute, but firmly believes that he is being prevented from making a significant contribution by this atmosphere, since aggression leaves him feeling very disillusioned and sad and stops him from functioning.
He wrote, “Therefore, I request you to accept my resignation from this committee and please appoint another person in my place.”
Aamir ended his letter by stating that, “I believe that amendments to the Copyright Act are long overdue and I am so happy that a person like you is spearheading this movement.
I believe that the changes that you are bringing about in the sphere of education are so dynamic, progressive and positive, that I have absolutely no doubt in my mind that you will do the same in the field of copyright.”
The Copyright Act panel has famous personalities such as Javed Akhtar, Boney Kapoor, Mukesh Bhatt, Vishal Bharadwaj, Vishal Dadlani, Prasoon Joshi, Anjum Rajabli, Madhu Manthena and Bhushan Kumar.
