According to figures released by 20th Century Fox this sci-fi magnum-opus has towered even above 'Titanic'.
James Cameron’s 'Avatar'
James Cameron’s latest now stands at $1.859bn (£1.15bn), while Titanic’s overall was $1.843bn (£1.14bn). However, the figures released have not even been mechanically altered for inflation or for the higher cost of the 3D film’s tickets.
Cameron: Master of alien world
From a scrappy filmmaker who made 'The Terminator' for $6.4 million to the man who made Titanic for more than $200 million, Avatar marks the complete transformation of its maker James Cameron.
Through this movie, we’re once again shown a glimpse of the master craftsman’s redoubtable capability. His previous, 'Titanic', which starred Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio, had created box office history during its release in 1997-1998.
Interestingly 'Avatar' had actually picked up two Golden Globes last week and is also expected to get an Oscar next month.
Earlier this month, 'Avatar' became the fastest movie ever to reach the 1bn (£623m) mark in ticket sales and it is believed to have even taken over the second place from ‘The Lord of the Rings’ movie – The Return of the King.’
With steady box office earnings, Avatar is incidentally the most expensive film ever made, with a budget of about $300m (£185m).
