“Avatar” won the “Best Picture and Director Award”, cementing speculations that it will be a strong contender for the 2010 Oscars.
"This is the best job in the world," said Cameron, at the star-studded awards night during his acceptance speech. "I just want you to give it up for yourselves. We make entertainment for a global audience and that's what the Golden Globes mean."
The movie has been highly praised across the globe for its state of the art 3-D camera effects and motion capture technology.
Since its release, “Avatar” has earned an astounding 1.6 billion dollars worldwide and is closing in on the 1.8 billion dollar record of Cameron’s 1997 Oscar blockbuster “Titanic".
Winners at the Golden Globes
Australian actress Nicole Kidman started the awards night with an appeal to donate money for the Haiti earthquake relief fund and also handed out the “Best Supporting Actress” statue to Mo’Nioque for her performance in drama ‘’Precious’’ as an abusive parent.
Other nominees in this category were Penelope Cruz for “Nine”, Julianne Moore for “A Single Man” and duo Vera Farmiga and Anna Kendrick for their performance in “Up in the Air”.
Meryl Streep won “Best Actress” award for her performance in musical/comedy in “Julie & Julie.” Chrisptoph Waltz took “Best Supporting Actor” prize for his performance in "Inglourious Basterds."
Animated movie “Up”, telling the story of a grumpy old widower, bagged the award for “Best Animated Picture”.
