Tanuja is an Indian actress and has also appeared in a handful of Bengali movies. Born into a Marathi family on Sept. 23, 1943, her father Kumarsen Samarth was a famous poet and movie director and her mother Shobhna Samarth was a famous actress of the 1940s. Her parents got separated when she was young and Tanuja took up acting as a child artist and continued acting till 1973.
Her debut venture was the movie ‘Hamari Beti’ along with her elder sister Nutan as Baby Tanuja.
She was widely acclaimed for her performance in the movie ‘Baharan Phir Bhi Aayengi’ which gave her a big break she was craving for. Her subsequent movie ‘Jeene Ki Rah’ with Jeetendra was a sensational hit.
In the same year, Tanuja was honored with Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award for her performance in ‘Paisa Ka Pyaar’ and was swamped with lead roles thereafter.
Tanuja’s performance in the movie, ‘Jewel Thief’ got her the Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award in which she stole the thunder from the lead actress Vyjayanthimala with the item number ‘Raat Akeli Hai’.
Tanuja has a variety of roles to her repertoire and is a well recognized and established actress. She met Sashadhar Mukherjee in the sets of the movie ‘Ek Baar Muskara Do’ with whom she developed a tumultuous romantic relationship and ultimately tied knot with him in the year 1973. They have two daughters, Kajol Mukherjee and Tanisha Mukherjee. Both Kajol and Tanisha are established actresses of the B-town.
