“My name is Prem, Prem Chopra” Familiar with this dialogue people? He is the famous versatile actor Prem Chopra. This actor has enacted in many Hindi and Punjabi flicks and has over 400 films under his belt.
Prem was born to Ranbirlal Chopra and Rooprani Chopra on Sept. 23, 1935 at Lahore when India was still under the British rule. He is the third of the six Chopra siblings.
Later, the Chopra’s moved to Shimla. He graduated from Punjab University and joined the tabloid ‘The Times of India’ in Mumbai in the late 1950s. He always aspired of making it to the big screen right from his childhood and kept waiting for his break despite the fact that his father wanted him to become a doctor.
It was in the year 1962 that earned him his first role in the movie ‘Chaudhary Karnail Singh’. The movie was a runway success and earned him the National Award, and he got noticed far and wide.
Prem tied knot with Uma and was blessed with three daughters, Rakita, Punita and Prerana. Punita is married to actor Vikas Bhalla and Prerana is married to actor Sharman Joshi of ‘3 Idiots’ fame.
