This female has the credit of singing for 6 decades in over 1000 movies and over 12,000 songs. She was born into the musical Marathi family of Pandit Deenanth Mangeshkar. Her sister Lata Mangeshkar is also one of the celebrated singers of India.

As a child Lata used to carry Asha ubiquitously and they were inseparable. Lata even took Asha to school and because of this she received a restraining order from her teacher. Owing to this reason, Lata quit her studies.

Due to the monopoly established by renowned singers like Lata, Geeta Butt, Shamsad Begum and a few others, Asha was overlooked initially. She shot into fame when she was roped into voice for the number 'Nanhe munne bachche' for Raj Kapoor’s ‘Boot Polish’. Her association with composer O.P. Nayyar later took her to great heights. Together, they delivered a lot of hit numbers.

Asha was honored with the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award in the year 2000 for her astounding contribution towards the augmentation of Indian cinema. Also, she was the first ever Indian singer to be nominated for the Grammy Awards for her album named ‘The Legacy’ with Ustad Ali Akbar Khan.

Asha has a burning passion for cooking and is an outstanding cook herself. Her dishes paya curry, Goan fish curry and dal are very much favored by the Kapoor family of B-Town. Once during her interview with Times of India, she even revealed that she might have carved a niche for herself in cooking if she turned down a career in singing, which she perceptibly never regretted.
