After less than three hours of deliberation, jurors ruled that Reeves was not liable for the alleged injuries of paparazzo Alison Silva and do not owe him anything.
Alfred Gerisch, attorney for Keanu Reeves made this statement after the verdict was announced: "We obviously felt from day one that Mr. Reeves was not negligent. It's unfortunate that this lawsuit was brought and it's unfortunate that we had to go this far — a lot of time, a lot of effort and obviously a lot of money."
Silva sued Reeves for $711, 974 in damages which include his medical bills and lost earnings due to the serious injuries he obtained. The paparazzo claimed that the 44-year-old actor hit him with his Porsche while trying to escape being photographed in March 2007. He said that this caused him to damage his left wrist and lose his work.
However, during the trial, jurors took notice of the contradictory statements which Silva gave. He was claiming to injure his left hand but a video which shows him running after celebrity Britney Spears and using his supposedly damaged hand to scale down a chain link fence was presented.
Lawyers for both parties gave their closing arguments Friday where jurors deliberated for five minutes before resuming on Monday morning. Civil trials in California require only nine jurors to agree on a verdict but in this trial, all 12 jurors agreed on rejecting the case.
When asked about the verdict, Silva told reporters: "I respect the jury's decision. That's what we were here for since the beginning."
Silva said that he will continue on being a celebrity photographer despite the result of the civil suit he filed. He also added that if given another opportunity, he will still take photos of Keanu Reeves, claiming that it’s just business.
Keanu Reeves testified early in the trial and stayed in the courtroom in Los Angeles for the whole duration of the trial. He was seen occasionally talking with his lawyers and signing autographs in the hallway.
