"I am not so different from the character of 'Anandi'" -- Avika Gor

The little chirpy girl 'Anandi' of daily soap 'Balika Vadhu' at Colors has become famous for her happy-go character in the serial.

Well-known as Avika Gor in the real world, the child actor has become famous for her acting skills. Portraying the character of a child wife, she has been successful in creating a huge fan following at this tender age.

In an interview with Total Filmy, Avika shares her thoughts about her reel and real life. Here are the excerpts:

Total Filmy: Tell us how you got the part of the protagonist in Balika Vadhu? Also tell us how you felt when you got the lead part?
Avika: I had earlier enacted in the show 'Rajkumar Aryan' with the same production house (Sphere Origin). When I went to their office for the audition for the role of 'Anandi', they asked me to go through three rounds of auditions, the look test, dialogue delivery etc. Finally, the channel selected me.

This is the common process for selection of any character.

Total Filmy: You are in 7th standard. How do you manage both work and studies?
Avika: Firstly, now I am in 8th standard. I manage both, my studies and acting. I go to school in the morning, and after school hours, I go for my shoots. And post my shoots, I attend my tuitions. If not possible on weekdays, I go for my tuitions on weekends. So, there is no problem in managing both of them.

Total Filmy: How supportive have your parents been in helping you build a career in TV industry?
Avika: My parents have been the biggest support in every way and every part of my life.

They are always by my side and ever ready to help me. Whenever I have to travel out of town, both accompany me. I get all their support, and without their support this would not have been possible. My father makes me understand the script, my mother looks after me, my looks, my hair, my food, and they are my best friends.

Total Filmy: You are portraying the role of 'Anandi' in the serial. How has the character inspired you, and how different are your real and reel characters?
Avika: From the very first episode, when my writer Mr. Purnendu Shekar was reciting the character of 'Anandi' to me, I found the character very interesting. I had learned about child marriages in school in 5th standard.

'Anandi’s' character has inspired me a lot and it’s the best role I have ever enacted. With the help of my director and my father, we as a team learnt the depth of the character.

I am not so different from the character of 'Anandi'; almost similar to it. I too ask a lot of questions, like to study, be with friends and my family. So, altogether I enjoy playing the character of 'Anandi'. It’s actually me on the screen.

Total Filmy: 'Jagadish' (Avinash Mukherjee) is your husband in the serial. How has it been working with him?
Avika: We are very good friends. We are of the same age, same class, so, we study together, play together, and it’s been a very good experience working with someone of same taste and hobbies.

Total Filmy: How does it feel being a part of ‘Balika Vadhu', one of the most popular soap operas on Indian TV?
Avika: It’s been nearly more than two years with Balika Vadhu now. I feel I can’t do anything but eat B.V., sleep B.V. and dream B.V. Just joking… actually these two years have taught me a lot. I am now able to spot my own mistakes, and try to improve myself. Being a part of a big show naturally helps you a lot and you get to meet more good people, fans, and definitely learn more.

Total Filmy: Besides 'Balika Vadhu', are you planning to work on any other TV project? Where do you see yourself five years from now?
Avika: Yes I am doing Kitchen Champion, a show with Colors Channel only. Five years from now I can only see myself being at the age of 17, and trying to learn and implement new things to be a better person in life. That’s all I can say about 5 years from now, as it’s too early to say anything.

Total Filmy: You have worked in movies like ‘Morning Walk' and ‘Pathshaala'. How do you define your Bollywood journey?
Avika: The movies which I had done were before I got ‘Balika Vadhu’. It was a wonderful journey in which I worked with very good people. They appreciated my work, and the main thing was it was during that period of my life when no one recognised me as anything. Then many seniors started appreciating me for my work and that’s when my journey started.

Total Filmy: Besides Anandi's character, which other character is your favourite?
Avika: I love all characters of the show. As you might be seeing that Dadisa character is full of joy and anger. Whenever we see her, there is always a question that what will she say now and what will happen. Bapusa and Tauji always give respect to the elders and their decisions, and they always fight for the truth. Sasuma, Taisa, and Sugna always listen to what is told to them. Hence, I love all characters and there is no special one that I can put my finger on.

Total Filmy: ‘Balika Vadhu- Kacchi Umar Ke Pakke Rishte' is a television show completely based on child marriage. What are your views on child marriage?
Avika: Like I said earlier, I had only read about it in my school but never knew that it existed till date. While shooting in Rajasthan, I met few girls of my age, who had been married, and I was surprised to see that they actually had left their school and indulged themselves in household work. They had to leave their parents and stay with their in laws.

I am too young to comment on this issue, but I do understand that child marriage is not good. However, after playing the role of 'Anandi', I am grateful to my parents and the society in which I live that is against child marriages.

Total Filmy: Do you like watching TV serials?
Avika: Yes, I do watch many shows like Uttaran, Laddo, Tarak Mehta, Lapatagunj. I also watch cartoon shows on channels like Nick, Disney and sometimes sports too.

Total Filmy: Who is your idol in reel and real life?
Avika: In reel life, any character played with full honesty is my favourite. And in real life any person whom I meet and know about his or her efforts towards life, I feel proud and feel that I should be like them e.g. my school teacher, my school principal, my parents, my channel programming head (Ashwini Yardi) my production house owner (Sunjoy Wadhwaa/ Comal Ma’am), my dance sir, my director, my writer and many more.
