Artistic paintings of Tagore fetch £1.6 million

On Tuesday, Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore’s twelve rare paintings fetched a whopping price of £1.6 million in an auction at the world’s fourth best art auction house Sotheby’s.

The interesting works of the artist included doodles, scratch art, figures, wildlife and naturescapes.

Interestingly, at the auction, Sotheby’s sellers described Tagore as ‘India’s modern artist'.

Rabindranath Tagore began painting at 60
Rabindranath Tagore was at 60 when he began to paint. In the last 15 years, he had done 2000 art works and out of those masterpieces, only twelve of his paintings were auctioned by Sotheby’s, London.

Moreover, these twelve paintings were supposedly a gift given by the artist to Leonard Elmhirst and his companion Dorothy Elmhirst of Dartington Hall Trust in Devon, Southwest England, in 1938.

Ever since Leonard Elmhirst and his wife established the Dartington Hall Trust charity, the rare twelve art works of Tagore had remained in the trust.

The trust has even cherished photographs and letters of Tagore, that were collected during his occasional visits.

The twelve masterpieces were considered truly exceptional by the Sotheby’s, a global company that has remarkable world records for auctioning art works. During the bidding, there was an intense competition and excitement.

One of the paintings of the artist, an untitled sorrowful portrait of a Bengali woman, was sold for a hammer price of 313,250 pounds, beyond the advertised sale price of 40,000 pounds.

Moreover, the interesting sketches of the two untitled landscape paintings of the artist were sold. Out of the two paintings, one fetched around 97,250 and another 91,250 pounds.

However, the identity of the different buyers has not been revealed.

Film documentary to be made on Rabindranath Tagore
A second film documentary will be made on the live of Bengali Shakespeare, Rabindranath Tagore. The first documentary of Tagore was made by late filmmaker Satyajit Ray.

The new biopic will be directed by Ujjvwal Chatterjee. The dialogues and screenplay will be written by distinguished writer Javed Akhtar. He will also be translating the lyrics of Tagore’s work ‘Geetanjali’.
