Hockey India needs to take a path-breaking step

New Delhi, January 13 -- As the Indian hockey decides to boycott their national camp, the second round of talks between the players and Hockey India (HI) officials continue.

The HI officials have announced that they will not welcome the national players into the camp if they do not abide with their terms.

HI president Ashok Kumar Mattoo says that the players were misled and have chosen a wrong path for protest.

“When asked what is important for them, money or India shirt, they said 'for the moment money'. And it's very very sad to hear that.” AK Mattoo quotes.

Sports minister asks players to resume training
Sports Minister MS Gill asked the hockey players to resume training and focus on the World Cup.

He also expressed concern over the stand-off between HI and players and said that the Sports Authority of India is closely monitoring the developments.

“After the World Cup, the Sports Ministry will take up the issues raised by the players with the elected Hockey India and find satisfactory solution,” Gill said.

No Funds: HI
The hockey players insist on getting their dues worth 4.5 Lakhs each for all tournaments of 2009. However, Mattoo says he wants to settle by paying only Rs.25,000 to each player.

Harish Sharma, one of the HI representatives, said, “Find me a company that is ready to sponsor the team and I will go down on my knees and beg them to help us."

Samaritans come to rescue
As the issue gets noticed by the rest of the country, Madhya Pradesh CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Actor-singer Salma Agha, officials of Shree Cement and Dr.Lames Leitao offered to provide financial help to the players.

The players say that they know that they will not be getting their dues in short notice; all they want is a written assurance that their money will be paid.
