Paa’s Music: Creative nuances that touch soulfully

Mumbai, November 19 -- Paa is a gripping realistic movie showing the emotions of the parent of an unusual child.

Not a run-of-the-mill, sappy morality Bollywood flick, Paa centers around the relationship between a father and his son who suffers for a rare disease that speeds-up the aging process.

Directed by R. Balakrishan and starring Vidhya Balan, Amitabh Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan, the movie follows the story of 13-year-old Auro, played by Amitabh Bachchan, who suffers from Progeria, a disease that causes premature ageing.

The music in the film is created by music maestro Ilayaraja, who as always has ensured that it flows in sync with the theme. The highlight of the album is the song “Mudhi mudhi ittefaq se” sung by Shilpa Rao, and can be rightly considered musical perfection.

A song that instantaneously sets you on a new glorious musical journey, ‘Mudhi mudhi ittefaq se’ has been recorded in two more versions: ‘Udhi udhi’ which leans to the original adaptation, and ‘Gali mudhi’ song that’s been filled with beautiful vocals by Shaan, characterized by a slow singing pace.

The album also features a children’s song “Halke se bol”, which is more of a lyrical chorus. Actually ‘Halke se bol’ begins with no background music, is average, and will not linger on for too long.

‘Hichki hichki’, sung by Sundhi Chauhan, doesn’t create an impact of the usual Sunidhi Chauhan song. The song ensues more as a situational number. On the other hand, ‘Gumm summ gumm’, sung by the music ace’s daughter Bavatharini, is fully supported by verses, a stomping chorus, with influences of carnatic and jazz and vocal bridges that pull the song with its interesting music.

The theme song of the film is appealing to the ears; on the whole, the movie does have some pretty good and catchy tunes. The production of the songs is surprisingly good, but in many ways it’s not customarily traditional music.

The songs go well with visual sequences and the soulful soothing music of the master musician is, as always, lyrically artistic and touching, drawing you in melodiously.
